He ran as a war hero and lost which is why he became a war protester. In typical JFKerry fashion he reinvented himself based on polls.

Kerry lost his first run at a Congressional seat
when he ran as a decorated veteran.

He switched to the anti-war movement to appeal
to the liberals in Massachusetts. That's why he
pretended to toss his medals.

He kept the medals because he knew that stance
would not always serve him in the future.

And it didn't. The union rank and file disapproved
of those who throw their medals.

And he knew he needed them for the wall of his
future office.

Kerry was the exception who joined protesters for political gain. Most of his fellow officers realized that Vietnam represented a complicated geopolitical situation in modern world, but that the tide of communism needed to be stemmed before it engulfed the entire world....much the same situation as terrorism today.
