I watched a military briefing on Fallujah and Najaf from Iraq on CSPAN yesterday. The commanders in the field see nothing to be gained from going in house to house, only more insurrection. They seemed to be concerned that the civilian leadership will force them into a senseless bloodbath. They seemed genuinely distressed.

Last week, Iraq's top U.S. administrator, L. Paul Bremer, announced that the new Iraqi army would start recruiting top former Saddam-era officers who were not involved in the regime's crimes. Saddam era officers who weren't involved in any crimes - and Bremer knows this because....? This month 126 US troops killed, 1200 Iraqis dead.

When I heard the news this morning about the 10 soldiers killed in Iraq, I felt awful.
