You know.......when they gave us free speech in the Bill of Rights, it wasn't with the proviso that we would all say good and agreeable things.

Agreed. Free speech includes the ability to say disagreeable things, including the ability to say disagreeable things in response to others who say disagreeable things. Criticism includes criticizing critics.
