Hussein was son of Ali (cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet) and was the favourite grandson.. Ali, 1st Imam of the Shias, and Hussein, 2nd Imam.. And one of the many reasons, Imam Ali Mosque in Southern Iraq and Kerbala (famous for the battle where Hussein and 70+ of his followers were killed by the Sunnis) are two of the most important sites for Shias..

Whatever are you talking about? Hussein is one of the most common Arab names, for both Sunni and Shi'a, and was the name of Saddam's father - Saddam [son of] Hussein.

Here's another definition of Saddam that includes both meanings..

The name comes from an Arabic verb meaning to clash, strike, bang, collide or generally behave in a hostile fashion.

Hussein is the name of the Shiia revered saint. Saddam was sunni. yet his mother called him by the name most popular with the Shiia.

Wow.. So no one else in the mid-east has that name? What about King Hussein of Jordan? He's not a Shiite..

And Saddam Hussein was not a shiite, although he did fancy himself as a descendant of the prophet (his name has been stricken from that list)..

But the point is that Hussein picked his name, "Saddam" personally. It was not his birth name. And he chose it for a reason. He planned on spending his life crushing, crashing, striking, and shocking..
