There's nothing new in these descriptions at all. They are both cliches.

Indeed. But that's why they illustrate. There's no point in finding families that differ from the stereotype.

I'm too lazy to wait all those three-seconds <g> to go back and find the original stories. But there was something in one of them that suggested that the families were picked or at least recommended by the congress folks in question, presumably as families that illustrate red and blue.

Did you read the post with the study done in Chicago on hooking up? The whole point of categorizing is to compare and contrast typical examples is to give us insights and to help us understand patterns. It's not about stigmatizing or insulting, although some will use it for that.

That the reporter chose Sugarland - home base for Tom DeLay (who may as well be Satan himself to many Democrats) - and framed it in an unrepresentative manner should set the scepticism alarms ringing.

And San Francisco is not an alarm ringer? C'mon. That's not at least the equivalent of DeLay-ville in the raised hackle department? Looks like pretty even treatment to me.

P.S. I was talking about red and blue the other day to someone who didn't have a clue what I was talking about. It took several backs and forths before blue states and red states registered with him. Not everyone who reads those articles comes to them with the background that you and I do. For many it's totally new information.
