But this cannot happen without massive political pressure, and our problem is that no one ever rioted for austerity. People tend to take to the streets because they want to consume more, not less.

Actually, I'm not really much of a que sera sera type, but I think that a lot of the shift in thinking has got to happen at a level which I feel that politicians are utterly incapable of getting their tiny minds around. Because of that, I have basically written off the Political Universe as an fantasy land. As for the politicians that inhabit the Political Universe, most are just the adult life stage of a species of spoiled, rich brats who wouldn't know what reality is if it came up and bit them on the ass (my apologies to the one or two percent of politicians who are actually worth their salt).

Monbiot may well be right about the "people's choice". I suspect this is the truth, at least in a world dominated by the media which is geared to sell-sell-sell. However, to leave it up to politicians to tell people to do with less... the only politician I've heard actually come out and say that in a way tell-it-like-it-is way was our PM Pierre Elliott Trudeau... many many years ago.
