Hi Doug,

I probably can't be much help, I don't use Norton..but I recall people who do saying that live update has been a problem in the past and that manual update is the way to go.

May not have anything to do with your current problem.

Edit: Maybe this will help?

A few years ago a friends computer had a virus that wouldn't allow NAV to run more than a few seconds before it stopped running. I downloaded AVG and ran it which the bug didn't detect and successfully eradicated it from the computer. My thought is that just perhaps you didn't eliminate the entire bug and it was written so as to not allow access to a major virus fighter like Norton but perhaps AVG could eliminate that possibility. I know it's a stretch but downloading and running AVG would be simple enough and it might be worth a shot. I'm not a sophisticated computer user and someone who is might shoot this thought full of holes but I figured I would post it just in case it worked.
