Don't forget the Merchant Marines unclewest.

My Dad served throughout WWll as a Merchant Marine. He lied and joined as a 15 yr old. His duties included transporting supplies to the Pacific theater from the west coast and returning German POWs back to Europe after the war. If you know the history of the Liberty Ships you know it was a dangerous place to be.

I have a great hand made piece carved by one of those returning POWs that Dad bought on one of the crossings. It's an 8 inch wood carving of a life ring with a watercolor depiction of the ship S.S. Fairisle in the middle and the words Le Havre, Panama, Liverpool.....S.S Faiisle 1.21.1946 around the edge.

The index card taped to the back says:

"Bought by Bud Allen in Jan. 1946 from a German POW who carved it on the voyage from New York City to Liverpool England and La Harve France. The S.S Fairisle was a Waterman Steam Ship Co Troop ship returning POWs to Europe and GIs back to the states. I believe I paid $3.00 for it."

And no thanks necessary.....it is you and your peers that deserve all the thanks.
