It serves both of them better to let him clean it up. Ultimately, that sends a stronger, more powerful message.

And Rumsfeld's opponents [and Bush's] know that.

Keeping Tenet and not keeping Rumsfeld is certainly not going to "energize the base".

Unfortunately, this administration is beginning to shift too easily based on public opinion (Arab public opinion and the media). Fallujah is an example of this. The apologies yesterday on behalf of the US for the actions of a few morons is another.

PS: Is anyone else wondering whether David Gregory is auditioning for Al Jazeerah?

Dems have their agenda for taking out rummy. It plays right into mine--use it to reestablish bush leadership perception. When you fire him, you praise him for all his service but say you think its time for a change. I come here not to bury Don but to praise him.
And replace him with a person with impeccable credentials. Clinton did some of that with Bill Cohen. Of course bush couldnt find a democrat right now, but there must be a republican or two out there. I though McCain would be a good choice. His only criticism of iraq is that we are not tough enough. He also would get to the bottom of the breakdown in the MP and MI units. And he will be viewed as an honest broker. The dems never stop praising McCain--some want him to run with kerry. How could anyone say he is anything but a great choice. Mike

The election is about Bush, not Rumsfeld. People are not going to vote against Bush because of Rumsfeld, any more than they are going to vote for Kerry because of Rumsfeld.

The average person doesn't follow this stuff like all of us here do. Most people couldn't name the Secretary of Defense or point him out in a lineup, let alone be swayed in an election by his presence in the Administration.

More "Insider Baseball" stuff.
