"OTOH - if this stuff is as serious as it seems, why hasn't the Bush administration pushed it more?"

I believe that it hasn't been pushed because it is not true. I don't doubt that Jordan arrested Al Qaeda operatives, but the details are hard to believe.

First, it is not 20 tons of chemicals they claimed to seize, it is 20 tons of explosives. That is 40,000 pounds ... unless it was a very primitive explosive, like in the Oklahoma bombing, the quantity seems excessive to me.

Second, they never released any further details about the alleged chemicals ... since the initial claim there has been silence on the matter. By this time they should have been able to identify the type and quantity of chemicals with specificity.

Third, I find it hard to believe that terrorists would try to combine an attack with both a huge amount of explosives and chemicals. Cyanide would be destroyed by such an explosion and rendered ineffective ... I imagine 40,000 pounds of explosives would do a number on sarin and other poisons, too.

Fourth, we recently had an example of a nation that made false claims about capturing alleged terrorists in order to impress the US. I forget which country it was, but they killed seven innocent people as part of a concocted terrorist plot.

The fact that Jordan was a target of a chemical bomb attack was widely reported. Even the fact that the attackers came from Syria was reported. What is unique to this post was the charge that VX and Sarin plus much else was to be used in the attack. The only source on this so far is John Loftus, who has a radio show in NY. He seems to be a Democrat. He may be Jewish, I don't know, so the whackos can seize on that I guess.

Excerpts from a BBC article - Jordan - "chemical bomb target"

news.bbc.co.uk
Last Updated: Saturday, 17 April, 2004, 16:40 GMT 17:40 UK Jordan 'was chemical bomb target'

Officials say materials for a chemical bomb have been found

Al-Qaeda-linked terrorists planned a chemical attack on Jordan's spy headquarters that could have killed 20,000 people, officials have said.

Earlier this week King Abdullah said a massive attack had been thwarted by a series of arrests, but named no target.
Now unnamed officials say the suspects have confessed to plotting to detonate a chemical bomb on the Amman HQ of the Intelligence Services.

The plot was reportedly hatched by al-Qaeda suspect Abu-Musab al-Zarqawi.
.....

"The target of this bomb was the headquarters of the Intelligence Services," situated on a hill in the western suburb of Amman, he added.

The official said another operation planned by the network was to use "deadly gas against the US embassy and the prime minister's office in Amman ... and other public buildings in Jordan".
