Mike,
That is a tougher question today than one might think.

Our Armed Forces are undergoing a difficult major transition period right now. General Schoonmaker was apparently brought out of retirement because his thinking compliments Rummy's. The transition is very complex, involves all services and includes the reorganization of fighting units, the restructuring of command, the relocation of overseas bases, the development of new systems using the latest technology, the redistribution of existing weapons systems and the retraining of the forces to employ new tactics. In their spare time, the Pentagon is running two wars and lots of other worldwide activities not making the press yet. If Rummy were to be replaced, I would recommend someone who has intimate and regular knowledge of all of the changes presently underway.

While I don't think anyone is irreplaceable, I do agree with GWB's decision to keep his war fighting team intact for now. You may think the President's decision is not best from a political perspective, but his job description says to protect and defend the United States. No where in there does it say to make sound political decisions for the Republican Party. I find it refreshing to finally have a President who is willing to put America's best interest ahead of even his own and his own party.
