Did you see Rumsfeld getting heckled during his testimony earlier today? His feathers were hardly ruffled. Thick skin takes time to peel out <ng>. Even chairman John Warner looked visibly upset, but not the defense secretary.

For once, i was glad to see the real American voice on TV: "Fire Rumsfeld!"

Though I still think taking Sadam out was a good idea

Sadam is bad, but without him we can't do anything in Iraq. It makes him our "best friend" in mid-east.

With regard to what was done to those prisoners in Iraq, as best I can tell, some of it was quite similar to what was done to me (and others) at a military school that I attended. If I had reported it to the school administration, I would have become such a pariah that I would have had to leave the school.

What happened to me was humiliating, and I could not do much about it because the guys doing it were literally twice as big as I was at the time.

But on the whole it was better than losing a leg.

I just think it's odd that mowing down people with a .50 cal. is OK but making them take off their clothes and jump into a pile is incredibly evil.

Bremer tried to warn Rummy about abuse
But of course he didn't listen.

washingtonpost.com

---------------------

Some U.S. officials said Rumsfeld was resistant to repeated warnings from Iraq governor L. Paul Bremer -- delivered as early as last fall -- that the United States was detaining too many Iraqis for too long and in poor conditions. Bremer told Rumsfeld and other senior administration officials that if the problem persisted, the political fallout in Iraq would be serious, the officials said.

...

Aides said yesterday that while Rumsfeld has known of the photographs since January, when they came to the attention of U.S. commanders in Iraq, he had not seen them, and he was not aware that CBS was about to air them until just hours before they were broadcast last week.

---------------------

So if Rummy's known about the pictures since January and Bremer warned him about abuse last fall, why is he waiting until everything has gone public to call for an independent investigation? The answer is obvious: he was hoping that this wouldn't go public and now that it has he's trying to save his own butt. Pathetic.

Note to the Board:
I do not want a big debate on this but these are important issues.
I am violating my own rule here on politics but it is the weekend and I think I can do so without a lot of cantankerous debate. If I am wrong and we start seeing too many political posts over this I will ask to have them yanked as well as report myself.

In general, I do not want to get bogged down on political issues unless they have a direct bearing on economics. Let's see if we can handle an occasional post without going nuts and everone getting fluffed up. If we can't we can't.

Don't think most of us hated him so much as merely disdained him. <g/ng>
