thank you for the reply. i did try disconnecting the mouse. it had no effect. i have been using the computer for a couple weeks before i got internet access and everything worked fine.

i was only on the internet for about four hours and according to the anti-virus program, i got 2 infections in that time (one Nachi.B worm). i didn't get any email except from my yahoo account. i couldn't believe that i got infected from the few trusted websites that i visited in that time.

i'm running windows 2000. (i'm sorry i didn't say that from the start). i have a laptop and somehow i left all my software back in the USA, so i have to be very careful about what i do with this thing.

i bought this laptop used. it is a 'COMPAC' and came installed with some of compac's software installed, unfortunately.

i don't know if i'll need the operating system disc if i uninstall the mouse. if i were sure i wouldn't need the CD i'd uninstall the mouse. i'm just not knowledgeable enough in this area to know for sure. i would guess that i wouldn't need the CD.

make there is a software tweak tool that could fix this type of problem?

thanks to both you and Shadowman for trying to help me.
