Dr. Id, I think there's some truth in the assertion. I tend to be one of those who thinks that images that create anger, passion and hatred at times when we need to be objective, rational and judicious, are counterproductive. That's not to say that we shouldn't see such images; but it does mean that we should be cautious of those who reuse such images for the purpose of inflaming a populace to act irrationally.

There are also times when a pious, smug, naive or accepting populace needs to see images that reflect reality.

We all understood the pain of 9/11; it was our pain. We all tended to ignore the pain of our actions in Iraq; it was their pain. We were overreacting to the punch we took on 9/11 by invading and occupying Iraq. We were under reacting to the punch we are giving many of the Iraqis by our heavy handed "missionary work" there.

News is news and should be aired. The attempt to suppress or delay the "abuse" news was unwarranted. The attempts to bring our dead home in the dead of night are unwarranted. The attempts to veil the horrific pictures of our dead and Iraqi dead are unwarranted. The attempt to capitalize on the 9/11 images, after their news publication, is evident. What those seemingly inconsistent efforts have in common is their single-minded political purpose of creating and maintaining support for the Iraqi occupation.

The truth tends to grow toward the light, however, and it will sometimes pop up when it's least expected.

You're right, not showing the images of 9/11 was voluntary, just as not showing the images of Fallujah was voluntary.

"liberals also fought tooth and nail to prevent disturbing images from 9/11"

Yes, it is sad to see such partisan blight gum up the memories of the right. The latest gem that they are starting to bray in concert, is that America's air waves and print stands were not saturated enough with months of coverage of the tragedies of 9/11. This is total buffoonery. Apparently, if the relatives of those in the towers along with all the rest of us, were forced to relive each and every final splat, the wingers truly believe that we would all join in with the FOX crowd every time they scream "NUKE THEM ALL" between beers.

Even in the face of monumental incompetence, the chicken hawks are not satisfied after destroying America's reputation abroad for a generation. God save us from another four years of their well made "plans".
