JDN, the only problem with this argument is that now the same types of abuses are being alleged in Afghanistan, and she wasn't in charge there. The allegations could be false, in which case your argument would still hold water. Too bad nobody has a cameral in Gitmo. My guess is this is SOP for macho prisoners.

I agree

the Commanding officer on down should be held fully accountable

for Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski to say she knew nothing about the abuse until weeks after it occurred is an admittance she dropped the ball - her job was commander of that prison and all people in it, soldiers and prisoners

pleading that the prison cellblock where the abuse occurred was under the tight control of Army military intelligence officers who may have encouraged the abuse is unacceptable - it was her command, her responsibility, she is answerable for what took place at the Abu Ghraib prison

make her and the soldiers below her who participated in it stand trial for their actions - make it a public trail/hearing so the rest of the world can see the democratic process - so they can see it will NOT be tolerated

I don't think the General should get the axe here. This is not a matter of training, at least not of the military sort. The general is not responsible for training that should have taken place at childhood. She could only work with the trash she had been given. She likely thought her men warranted a certain basic degree of trust and she extended that trust. If this is true, then her assessment was wrong, of course. But it is understandable and to be expected of all decent people. I think it is wrong to nail her for this matter.
