I think the only thing for Bush is to stay the course.

I don't question that if by staying the course you mean finishing what we started. As usual, the issue is how best to accomplish that. If he can't hold on to the defectors, the outcome might well be cut and run. I think the better strategy is to impress on them the risk of bailing rather than to try to bring them back fully into the fold of true believers or berating them for having abandoned that status. Half a loaf is enough in this case. Trying to hold on to the other half looks like ego or stubbornness. In a war, constant adjustments must be made. That's not only on the battlefield.

Not so fast Bill. Bremer just said we would get out 6/30 if new iraqi govt asked us to.
Thats a big shift. I dont think they will ask us to get out on 7/1 but perhaps by end of year. Only folks there we owe anything to are the kurds. Think that sistani, kurds and sunni moderates will make a concerted effort for a federalized, and representative islamic (if only in name but certainly more moderate than iran) state.
US job now is to help sistani by getting rid of al sadr once and for all. Big battles underway and mosque shot at. We deny it was us so perhaps al sadr will try to shoot up mosques and blame us. Buchanan talked about a solution like this on imus this morning. mike
