I hadn't realized how significant the fire bombing destruction was in Japan (100,000 people (civilians) dead in one night in the fire bombing of Tokyo alone). Amazing damage, and to many, many cities. The movie the Fog of War details it better than I possible could. Make sure you see the movie. It's a terrific work of cinema on many levels.

I wonder if anyone's ever looked into the effect of the tremendous war death decreases in the male populations of Germany and Japan in terms of the willingness of those countries to change course following the war? A lot of testosterone went away and was gone for a generation

Didn't seem to stop the Soviets, now did it?

They lost some 40 million people (out of around 200 million as I recall)..

They were just as aggressive after WWII and for the following 45 years.

But it was certainly the case with France and Britain following the blood bath of WWI.. And the same could be said of Germany.. However, it would appear Germany had not lost its aggressive inclination since Hitler was able to arise and launch WWII (much to the unwillingness of the allies to re-experience the prior world war).

It makes sense that a stronger female oriented population would create some cultural and political changes, especially in populations that had seen their sons, husbands and fathers leave for war, die, and accomplish nothing but disaster.
