Yes, the Israelis intend holding the corridor. They always kept control of the border via Oslo. Egyptian assurances are worthless, if Egypt had kept their part of the treaty (as Jordan has, btw), there wouldn't be this flood of arms and contraband coming in through Rafah. Egypt is either winking at it or more likely, actively colluding in it. The contraband (women, drugs, etc) is a big source of funds for Arafat, who gets a piece of the action.

Also the folks being dislocated deserve compensation

Rafah is run by the UN. It's a refugee "camp". Let the UN deal with it. Kofi always has his Annan in a tizzy (nice phrase) anytime Israel does anything to defend itself. Name one thing Israel hasn't been condemned for.
