the American people would be appalled if the response is too disproportionate.

I think real democracies are going to find it harder and harder to fight wars. The world wide communications are such that, even with massive censoring and control of the media, the truth will still get out. The war option is not acceptable to normal people brought up in civilized nations. The political downside of the war in Iraq is still yet to be felt.

In my opinion there will be a backlash against the war in Iraq (and wars in general) soon. Probably this year, almost certainly by the end of next year.
