I think most people know that creating implacable enemies is a bad idea. What's happening in Iraq (and Israel for that matter) is that large numbers of enemies are being created. It's best not to have them in the first place.

I also believe that the Iraq situation will reinforce global diplomacy's tendency to let almost the worst things happen provided it doesn't affect "stability" (ie, head in sand as usual.) Life will be good for the world's dictators after this. Not that life has ever been bad for these people on average (the Hitlers who commit suicide are in the minority, most live out their lives in power, or else get a golden retirement somewhere...)
