That was the same arguement used during Vietnam days

re:We are in the midst of the most difficult trial America has faced since Viet Nam. It could rip our social fabric, our economy, and our relationship with afore friendly nations apart. Our metal is being tested.

Better off to not get ourselves into idiotic no win situations in the first place.

Instead of supporting people like Saddam, the Taliban, the Shah, and the Saudi's we should support democracies when possible and tread very carefully trying to suppress dictatorships.

We should be on an energy conservation path. Not an ever more gluttonous path. This is the only thing that will keep energy prices low while we prepare for alternative sources, conservation. Not our reserves, not worse environmental standards. Only conservation can keep our economy from crashing and burning.

The money saved and invested will make us stronger. As we avoid war and prolifigate spending they would impoverish themselves and grow weaker.

We have a bigger danger facing us. A country of a billion people who are industrializing at a rapid pace and copying our technology. They are catching up as we begin to lag in technology. The will absorb us if we are not careful. They are beginning to use energy at the same rate we are complete with SUVs. Their usage will accelerate. And soon other 3rd world countries will begin to use energy. Huge countries like India and China.

Every engineer we have designing tank systems is an engineer taken away from automobiles, or solar or other systems that strengthen our balance of payments with the world.

If you look at this long term, it's obvious, energy will be our Achilles heel as long as we continue the path we are on with Bush. Soon we will have a two tiered society that more closely will resemble China's society of feudal rulers and serfs.
