Patricia possible the most effective negative of our recent memory?
Some close others though.
As a generalization , Watergate, and "All The Presidents Men" slapped us in the proverbial face with truths we just had to face. And possible the new truths to face about the power... of the power of the Oval office.

The conspiracy theories regarding Watergate were those which came afterward attempting to guess who the "Deep Throat" informant was if he existed or whether "Deep Throat" was some intelligence organization leaking info to bring about a "coup". Another subject of conspiracy theories was what secret valuable information the Watergate burglary was aimed at uncovering.

All just a refusal to face the obvious fact that a Presidency was brought down by trying to cover up a few people's involvement in authorizing some sleazy pointless crimes. The simple truth isn't enough - so some grand conspiracy theory about something vitally important must be behind it.

Watergate wasn't a conspiracy theory, or even a theory, beforehand.
