No it was not the fear of assasination (even though that is one reason being touted by the Gandhi family). Sonia Gandhi was born in Italy (to Italian parents) and took her Indian citizenship only after her husband Rajiv Gandhi became the PM (or around that time frame). There was a strong opposition by a good percentage of the population on her being the PM, not to mention the legal hurdles she would have to cross.

Further, I think she feels that she is not extempareous enough to answer any questions in the Congress whenever she might be questioned (lucky for Bush, he does not have to go through such grilling). Also my personal belief is that she might not be strong enough to take the heat that goes with being a Prime Minister. The market crash soon after her party's victory might also have spooked her.

Jewel, I'm having trouble figuring out why she was head of the party if she didn't want to become PM. I bought a ton of Indian securities on the big scare, but I worry a bit that the voting public may feel they were given a raw deal by the Congress Party.
