Dave, you should have got an extra jab in there - something like "I'm not surprised at the lack of understanding - it is obvious that few people on SI know how to do trend analysis"

So it merely reflects a thread's waxing or waning in activity? If there's no weighting for the number of posts/bookmarks, it does seem like it would be easy to maniplulate ... start a thread and make one post a day for seven days, then on day 8 make 11 posts and you'll rocket to the top with a score of 1000% ...
