<<< If the police refused to take notice of Charles Manson and Jeffrey Dahmer, while busting your son, wouldn't you have a legitimate gripe?>>>

Even in this extremely narrow and improbable example that you postulate, there are two differennt things going on:

1. The police is so improbably negligent in their duties in not wanting to take notice of Manson/Dahmer while busting my son that would be grist for the twilight zone. Yes, I would be outraged by the police behavior and I would do everything possible to change it. But, there is only so much that I can do about such a civil and social outrage. The rest of the community has to be involved.

2. As for my son, I would be far more outraged. My kids do not go around stealing cars. I do not care if the world around us is going to hell, but my kids do not steal cars.

I would have to re-examine my entire life, what my core values are, and how I failed to instill in my child, acceptable behavior. There would be hell to pay in my family.

If the police didn't bust Manson and Dahmer, I would have a gripe because they wouldn't be doing their job, which is to bust criminals. My son is beside the point. If I bring my son into it, it sullies my argument rather than helps it. If the police reply to my complaint with the excuse that they don't have the resources, then and only then can I legitimately bring my son into it.
