re: What I did say is that I do not see what the starting of a pre emptive war in Iraq and subsequent loss of lives and dollars has to do with the war on terrorism. And JF and I should not be the only ones on this thread questioning that logic.

These folk think that al Qaeda, which was responsible for 90% of terrorism over the last 10 years, and responsible for 9/11, was headquartered in Iraq.

If they still believe that, then they have their heads in the sand.

I frankly don't understand how people can think that shooting at the wrong target is the best strategy. We had them mostly in one place, at one time, and we decided to use the vast resources of our military... to go somewhere else.

They want to believe Bush at any cost......and its costing us plenty.

If people cared about real revenge for 9/11, and really cared about stopping terrorism, they would be incensed about the incompetence. Al Qaeda is terrorism, and al Qaeda grows stronger, the cancer spreads. And we are in the wrong country.

Tell me about it........if the White House were a public corporation, Rummy and Cheney would have been fired 6 months ago, and a shareholder revolt would have axed Bush within the past 60 days.

Who in the world would not have supported a massive, really massive action to take out bin Laden and al Qaeda? Why did they oppose the adventure in Iraq? That's right, they all hate America. They are jealous. I forgot.

Astounding! Its simple logic and yet it escapes so many. Meanwhile, after three years, bin Laden remains free and these people think Bush is doing a great job!

"shooting at the wrong target" you ask?

you think? read this:

Who in the world would not have supported a massive, really massive action to take out bin Laden and al Qaeda? Why did they oppose the adventure in Iraq?

why indeed

"Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the 38-year-old Palestinian blamed for hundreds of deaths in terrorist attacks in Iraq, appears to have adopted the remnants of the sleeper cell network in Europe that helped spawn the Sept. 11 hijackers and now serves as the primary organizer of a diffuse, but growing collection of Al Qaeda veterans and new recruits on at least three continents, according to a recent US spy agency report, interviews with intelligence officials, and terrorism specialists."

where is he you might wonder?

Zarqawi is best known as the leading Islamic terrorist in Iraq, believed to be responsible for the deaths of at least 700 people there in the last year and this month's beheading of American Nicholas Berg.

After months of investigation, a picture is emerging that connects Zarqawi, whom US officials believe is still in Iraq, to the deadly train bombings in Madrid in March, a foiled plot to blow up Jordanian government offices in Amman last month, and the recent capture of several suspected terror cells in Italy, among other plots, the officials said.

from Iraq he controls international

'more dots in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East increasingly lead back to Zarqawi' - 'Zarqawi and his network have plotted terrorist actions against several countries, including France, Britain, Spain, Italy, Germany, and Russia. Since last year, members of his network have been apprehended in France, Britain, Spain, and Italy.'

"And we are in the wrong country"

not looking that way is it?

“Now, at the same time, we had this war on terrorism. We were fighting Al Qaeda. We were engaged in Afghanistan. We were looking at ‘cells’ in 60 countries. We were looking at threats that we were receiving information on and intelligence on. And I think most of the generals felt, let’s deal with this one at a time. Let’s deal with this threat from terrorism, from Al Qaeda.”

.....was headquartered in Iraq.

LOL!!!

Keep it up John, you're getting funnier by the minute.

shooting at the wrong target

Excuse me? If they are shooting at us...how can it be the wrong target if we shoot back?? Why are you so certain Al Qaeda is not in Iraq?

and al Qaeda grows stronger

That's debatable...but I think you're dead wrong.

This is incorrect. I do not think that al qaeda was or is headquartered in Iraq.

I frankly don't understand how people can think that shooting at the wrong target is the best strategy. We had them mostly in one place, at one time, and we decided to use the vast resources of our military... to go somewhere else.

this assumes that resources are being diverted away from al qaeda in favor of Iraq. I believe this is a bad assumption. As has been pointed out, a direct military assault is not the proper strategy to go after someone who has declared war on you, who also does not confine themselves to any border. Because you do not see where an attack against Iraq fits into the war on terror (and not necessarily just a war on al qaeda), does not mean that it doesn't have a legitimate place in that strategy.

If people cared about real revenge for 9/11, and really cared about stopping terrorism, they would be incensed about the incompetence. Al Qaeda is terrorism, and al Qaeda grows stronger, the cancer spreads. And we are in the wrong country.

Why are you convinced that the war on terror is a failure? I've seen a number of examples where plots were thwarted. And there hasn't been an attack in our borders since 9/11.
