What we really needed in Iraq was: 1) a real reasons for invading everyone could understand without lying about it 2) Moderate Arab states in the coalition 3) To finish Afghanistan first so NATo could shift troops to Iraq 4) A post war plan with a government to take over that was not Chalabi

Given that we now know the WMD's intel was mostly fabricated and exaggerated, the whole business should not have happened. Surrounding Saddam and frisking him with UN inspectors should have been good enough. Eventually we could have found someone to take out Saddam. Or just go in and arrest him in a surgical strike move.

I read somewhere when the Iraqi army was disbanded, they were told to take their weapons home!

Yep. I warned from the beginning... not enough troops. The U.S. Army only had 10 Active divisions thanks to the end of the cold war peace dividend. Some wanted only 8 divisions! Thats only 10,000 troops/real operators per division! The logistics tail is about 7 times as big. But troops on the ground, active and reserve is only 134,000! Going in the Pentagon KNEW that the Iraqis were allowed by law to own automatic weapons and RPGs (anti-armor shaped charge descendant of panzerfaust). Thats SCARY for an invading force. The Soviets invaded Berlin against the Volksturm (people's army..regular civilians with automatic weapans and panzerfausts..hundreds of thousands of them) and managed to KILL 100,000 Soviets in taking the city. Think about that. Thats the kind of Risk Rumsfeld decided to take knowing that he had air superiority. But since you can't indescrimately bomb civilian populations anymore like you could in WWII...what an unbelievable risk to take!
