There's nothing preventing what they call a fusion ticket of Kerry a Democrat vs. McCain a Republican. It's not against the law or anything like that. I don't think it's against the major party's bylaws either, which would prevent it from happening. Of course, it would fuel people's frustration that there's not a huge difference between the two main political parties. And, it would probably cause McCain to get booted from the Republican party. Although they can't kick him out, they would shun him like the plauge. But, it would certainly be a slam dunk for Kerry. It would be hard to imagine Kerry losing with McCain on his ticket. Which is probably why there's still speculation that he might entice McCain to join him.

Re: How can Kerry, a Democrat, "pair" with McCain, a Republican, in the forthcoming presidential election?

In fact, how can CBS even contemplate such a combination -- and without the approval of those involved?

Yet another clue to the extreme "volatility" of the current state of affairs in America... As I said before, the coming presidential election will not be "just-another-election". Bipartisanship at the very top of the US executive --isn't that a premiere? As I recall, it can happen at the Cabinet level: Prez Clinton picked Republican Sen Bill Cohen as Secr. of Defense, for instance. BTW, it further validates my view on the rampant Israelization of the US: a Kerry-McCain ticket somehow mirrors the Sharon-Peres alliance of 2000....
