There is no contradiction between freedom and conscription. In fact sharing the sacrifice of military service will encourage the debate of whether a war is justified, and may stop some wars from taking place. I am much more worried about a group like the current admin hijacking the military for their own purpose, and the rest of the country not having an incentive to stop them early on.

And I am especially disgusted by the people whose only complaint about this war is that it costs so many $$. You know that the president intended to appeal to these low-lifes by simultaneously giving them a tax cut. basically he is saying, "don't worry about the poor enlistees getting killed and maimed. It won't cost you anything. Here's another $200. Go buy some beer and barbecue." And of course the morons fall for it everytime.

At least LBJ placed a 10% surcharge on Federal income tax to pay for the VietNam war. So he wasn't pretending the war had no cost. Of course that was before Reagan proved that deficits are irrelevant.
