The end of the oil age is on the horizon. Consumption will increase worldwide, but production will not, and may even start to decline later this decade. In conjunction with these macro-economic trends, alternatives to oil are starting to become more cost effecitive and realistic. Electric, fuel cells, hydrogen, etc. are making gains and will continue to do so. I bet within ten years you'll be able to drive something other than a petrol powered automobile. Most likely, a fuel cell or hydrogen powered car. It's really a matter of the costs becoming competitive at this point. The technology is there already.

4) As for getting off the hydro carbon fuel standard, the consequences are massive unemployment in the US auto industry as our automakers can't compete with some of the foreigners.

I'm not so sure, although I am certainly no expert on the auto industry. Hybrids could become the "next big thing" to spur car sales, there really isn't much different between a hybrid and a regular car in terms of Detroit. The new hybrid SUV is a ford product.

Detroit already has the hydrogen cars in the lab, are those not competitive with other non hydrocarbon cars from other manufacturers? US cars are awfully competitive now, imho.
