The U.S. is one of the most religious countries on earth. We have a perception that the Middle East is full of a bunch of religous zealots, when in reality, the U.S. is one of the most fundementalist and religou countries on earth. It's just hard for most people to see things that way when you're on the inside looking out. I agree with you that religion plays an undue influence on our society, just look at the whole abortion debate, and it's used for ulterior motives by opportunists politicians. But, I think it's really a vehicle to achieve their wider goals, rather than a reason to achieve their wider goals, like control of ME oil supplies.
