You make a fair point about Peter's rhetoric. He is talking about a sliver of the left on the edge who see america as a bigger threat than al quaeda and have "long since abandoned the cause of universal human rights, highlighting oppression only when it can be blamed on Washington." And then there are those others on the left who are loyal americans but who do hate bush enough to accept what the extreme says as the holy grail.
I think what Peters says is mostly true. Those of us who have supported the war have heard the words tipping point used over and over by anti-bush folks. It is my belief that we are really there now. The future of iraq will be largely determined between 7/1(turnover to iraqis) and January(iraqi elections). Forget labels for a sec. Those who think removal of saddam was a good thing, that iraqi freedom and self determination are a good thing, that the creation of a pathway to democracy and a federal solution are good things, should all be rooting for success of this new more pragmatic american policy. Those on the right should fess up to mistakes in operations, and irrational overconfidence and exhuberance along the way. I have argued that on Bill's conservative thread for months. But the left has an obligation to support progressive policies that takes the current facts on the ground into account without giving in to particularly the terrorist, and baath part of the resistance. At the same time nationalist insurgents should be won over to the side of the new iraqi regime if at all possible. And both left and right should be supporting progressive policies regardless of whether bush or kerry win the election. I, for one, will try to do this. Mike
