Back in the time you were describing, the great majority of Mexican immigrants (as opposed to most other immigrants), is that they were here just for the opportunity to have a job... any job as in Mexico they either had no job, or no opportunity to get one... but they never real wanted to stay in the US. They hated staying here and as soon as they could they would return to their place of birth (in most cases) but with savings or the possibility of establishing a business in Mexico... In my eyes, the politicians in both sides are as blind as bats and they only make rhetorical speeches with pure bull shit as content in them, so the people are left to their own means to make the best of the situation... Most of them are very hard workers and they will do the impossible to please a boss that treats them fairly... I remember once, during my time in San Diego... I hired this very strong Mexican as a maintenance guy who would do all sorts of things... problem was is he liked Budweiser a tad too much so he was a little unreliable, but if he showed up... he would work his tail off... there is this one time that I need an old tree taken down... it is about 10:00 AM and I said: Miguel, here is the chain saw.... here is the gas can.... take the tree down and make a pile in that corner with the remains.... if you need me I will be around just look for me so... away he goes and starts... I was in and out of the place, at first I was keeping an eye on him to see things would be going smooth... so I get busy with my stuff and next thing I know (by around two in the afternoon or so...) I see Miguel hacking away with an axe at the tree... which by now... it is the mere stump left of it and Miguel is hard at work with the smaller pieces... So... I asked him.... Miguel what happened to the chain saw? Oh... it is over there... I say... well... how come you are not using it? He says: I ran out of gas and I did not want to disturb you as I saw you were busy (he had also used up al the gas in the gas can)... so, he found this axe in the maintenance room and attacked the three with gusto.... I asked him –in complete disbelief... how far into the tree had you gone before you stopped using the chain saw? About half way he answered.... I just shook my head and I had to smile Now... this was some very thick old tree... and he just decided that he was going to take it down in no time.... and so he did... and had piled up the wood in the corner as I had asked him and now he was hacking away at the root stump.... I could not contain my smile and told him to clean up and take the rest of the day off.... Tomorrow I would help him with one of them bobcats to take the root ball out… (there are attachments that will pulverize these things in no time at all (Whatever was left of it) and I should add this was in the middle of 85 degree weather.... he was an amazing guy... he continued to work for me for a while until one day he just disappeared as suddenly as he had appeared... He also claimed that he was going to have a hard life since a 'witch' in his native town in Mexico had told him so... I tried to convince him that only he would determine how hard a life would he have... there was no way I was going to convince him otherwise.... The other workers and I were always bewildered by the way this strange but good man behaved and carried himself; he was one of those 'gentle giants' that seemed content with the hand that life had dealt him and he carried on quietly without much fuss about what would happen to him...
