Brian, I agree with your reasons why institutions will buy AMAT shares. When will they buy? Why have they been selling? Institutional investors hold the key to where any large capitalization stock trades.

If we cannot agree on that then you must believe that if the management of Applied Material is visionary enough for your liking then it simply does not matter where the stock trades?

You sure you aren't married to this stock?

But perhaps your money does matter to you? So I ask you again when, and at what price level, will institutions step in and buy and hold enough shares to cause another sustained rise in the stock?

Disclosure: I have no position in AMAT. I think it is a great company with terrific management. But the stock like most other semi equipment stocks is well off its 52 week highs due to institutional selling. I just can't get comfortable buying AMAT shares here as a long term investment at these price levels.

What I think really does not matter. What institutions do does matter.

As Gottfried aptly stated the best time to buy AMAT was many months ago. Since the stock has been in a downtrend since November I am certain of two things. First there has been more institutional selling than buying since November. Second institutions will be net buyers who actually hold AMAT longer term again.

I think that when that day comes that the volatility indicators will all be challenging past highs, the BP Indices will have all gone below 30 but will have generated buy signals and the Investment Newsletter Writers Survey will have had more bears than bulls. At that time I too may become a long term holder of this stock.

Best of luck with your holdings Brian. Thank you for posting all the articles and information you put on this thread. You cover much more than just AMAT. You even post articles and information from sources that do not agree with your point of view.

Believe me I would be very happy to see you Cary, Don and all the wonderful long term investors make a bundle on AMAT. All you need is long term institutional investors to step up to the plate and you'll get there.
