well boot away! "As president, Reagan was genial, ever-smiling -- ignoring unpleasant facts, idealizing hopeful fantasies," the paper's editorial said. "The mark of Reagan's presidency was paradox. Having campaigned as an implacable foe of government deficit spending, he left office with a federal debt that was nearly triple its level when he was inaugurated. He succumbed, as Bush has, to the fallacious 'supply side' economic notion that government revenues rise if taxes are cut. Hero though Reagan was to so many Americans, his legacy is marred. Economically, the Reagan years were epitomized by a freewheeling entrepreneurialism and free spending. But the affluent got more affluent and the poor got poorer. The number of families living below the poverty line increased by one-third. The Reagan administration's zeal for deregulation of industry helped create the savings and loan debacle, which left taxpayers holding the bag for billions of dollars in losses." LA TIMES

Nice work, ATA. Do you remember the story when Reagan was shot? - as they rolled him shot through the chest into the room full of doctors and nurses, the man managed to smile and made a remark: "I hope you guys are not all Democrats..."

He is credited with coming up with what is probably by far the best joke about Alzheimer's - which would seem the last thing one would expect from a person suffering from this condition. "The one good thing about this Alzheimer's disease" - told Reagan to a visiting friend - "is that every day you get to meet new people..."

He was a great President - and a great man.

And very nice thoughts they are. Being a little older then you I remember working and serving at the end of the Carter years. Was not pleasant. From a military experience the difference when Reagan became President was noticeable almost over night. It's unfortunate that there aren't more like him willing to serve us.
