Suppose the Japanese Emperor had come on the radio - several bands, including shortwave - and said "We realize we cannot win. We surrender to the Allied Powers."

How could the US Gov't, or anyone else, have ignored that?

You simply refuse to accept reality: They intended to continue resistance as hard as they could after an Allied invasion, killing as many Allied soldiers as possible.

I was on Guam working on B-29's when the airplane left Tinian. There was no public discussion - even the crew did not know what was on board before the mission. There was also a good chance it would not work. But just in case it did, put on the dark glasses and stay 10 or 15 miles away.

And, that GW Bush just ACTS really stupid because it gets people like hawkeye and sig heil and ish and nadine to feel sorry for him and defend him.

You seem to think that I'm some kind of Bush fanatic and I'm not..

Hell, if Clinton had had the b*lls to do the same thing in 1998, I would have supported him. Unfortunately, he had put himself in a "wag the dog" situation due to his impeachment and Monicagate. Those events clouded the rationale for every action he took during that period.

Personally, I fault Bush Sr. for not having pushed the UN to overthrow Saddam back in 1991. Maybe if he had, we would have been able to create the kinds of regional change that would have made the creation of Al-Qaeda unlikely, if not impossible.

And if were Al Gore who had been elected President and chosen to FINALLY enforce those UNSC resolutions against Saddam, I would have cheered him as well..

And if Kerry moves to the right and acknowledges the necessity of advancing democratic and economic change in the mid-east, including forcing a resolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, I will support him as well..

What I don't support are people like you who sit there with their heads in the sand and refuse to recognize that we have problems far more serious than Saddam's WMD in the region and that Saddam was just the first step in a long battle..

And I really hope that the sacrifices we're making in Iraq are sufficient to energize the regimes of the region to open up their economies so that we don't have to fight another military conflict there.
