It doesn't look like a big deal to me. Just what I'd expect from somebody like that. Not everyone has good judgement about sex partners. He does seem to have an immature attitude to the sexual side of life - he thinks a 17 year old is a good prospective sex partner, apparently. In NZ, that's a legal age for sex. It's not paedophilia. A 17 year old female is a woman.

But a 14 year old IS.. And he was caught once before (and it was hushed up) trying to bait such a young girl into meeting him.

Btw, the Federal government obtained the casefiles and evidence from his more recent activity. I'm sure they are investigating him and seeing if they can make a case against him.

Btw, the detective was posing as a 16 year old because New York's age of sexual consent is 17.

Furthermore, I found it remarkable that the head prosecutor in that town was not informed of the "deal" to dismiss the charges. The Assistant District Attorney was fired over the case, because she made the deal without consulting her boss.

What disturbs me is that were this guy anything but a controversial public figure, he'd have done jail time and been forced to register as a sexual offender.

Either way, it seriously calls into question his personal integrity and character.
