He won the 3rd World War without firing a missile! He put up the system that helped end the Cold War! He removed single handedly the threats of nuclear holocaust from a rogue communist state bent on to realize the dreams of taking USSR to the warm water ports and eventual control of oil lanes of Gulf. Afghanistan was the opening salvo, a gamble that was rightly handled by this great man, the call of ‘evil empire’ and standing up to Soviet challenge through the decade he brought disarray in the post Brezhnev politburo, Andropov could not control events and loss and demise of USSR expedited as a result of dedicated implementation of George Kenan theory of containment policy applied in soul and substance. The implosion of Soviet Union was not a fluke but an end game of a carefully designed strategy in which even the Holy See had a role to play. Couple this with the grand strategy of containment in Europe putting up the System that helped end the Cold War! Some critics suggest that "Reagan certainly benefited from the tide of history in that he was in office when the Soviet dominoes finally fell...." Documents revealed after the fall of the wall show that the "nuclear freeze movement" was a Kremlin operation. Introduction of Pershing missiles in 80’s in Europe helped end the Cold War! 1983 US Deploys Pershing Missiles- Soviets Walk Out of Talks on November 23, the US deployed the first Pershing Intermediate-range Ballistic Missile, in West Germany. The Pershing was developed and deployed in response to the Soviet intermediate missile previously targeted at Western Europe. The Soviets opposed US deployments, and peace groups throughout Europe demonstrated against them. On the day the deployments took place, the Soviets walked out of the disarmament talks taking place in Geneva, in protest. When Reagan, despite the antics of the axe throwing democrat Presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln Hart, deployed the Pershing missiles in Europe this countered the move of Soviet intermediate range missiles to places such as Poland and Czechoslovakia, a violation of the SALT treaty. Reagan was accused by the democrats, of course, of a "dangerous escalation in the arms race." However this deployment of Pershings led the Kremlin back to the SALT table and to the eventual withdrawal of the Soviet missiles. The MX missile system, which Reagan pushed through despite the howling, hand wringing democrats, was decisive in defeating the Soviets. The MX was a hardened silo missile system with two missiles in each silo. This was a second launch program. The Soviets ICBMs carried 200 to 250 megaton warheads. In contrast US ICBMs had much smaller warheads of 35 to 100 megatons but were extremely accurate and, after a Soviet attack was under way, could land on top of Soviet silos preventing a second Soviet launch. The Soviet strategy of preventing a second launch of US ICBMs after the Soviet "first strike" demanded this "throw weight" because Soviet missiles were not accurate enough to hit US silos and prevent the second US launch and thus depended on a gigantic nuclear explosion big enough to come close enough to kill the US silos. Reagan insisted on the MX system of hardened silos to cancel out the Soviet "throw weight". In other words, the Soviets could never prevent the second US launch. This made the entire Soviet ICBM arsenal obsolete and forced them to scrap any illusions of gaining advantage through a "first strike". It has now been well documented that when Pope John Paul II ascended the throne of St. Peter he was immediately contacted by the Reagan administration and visited by then CIA Director Casey. Between them they agreed upon a common plan to undermine Soviet control of eastern Europe. Reagan not only supported Polish Solidarity with cash but also slipped such practical things as computerized underground printing presses into Poland. When Reagan met Gorby in Iceland he refused to cancel what was then dubbed "Star Wars" and has now become, over consistent democrat opposition, the Strategic Defense Initiative. This was the final straw on the Soviet camel's back and led to the historic agreement between Reagan and Gorby to actually begin destroying their nuclear arsenals. These moves by Reagan and the "American Miracle" of Reagan's economy, sufficed for the realization of reformist members of the Politburo that they could no longer economically afford the Cold War. They then collapsed and retreated to domestic spending priorities. A ground convoy had moved the missiles from Ramstein AFB to Mutlangen Missile Storage Area. Then LTC Douglas J. Middleton initiated the training and readiness program that would successfully transition the 1st Bn 41st FA into the first operational Pershing II battalion. The training was intense. By December 15, the first operational Pershing II firing battery, A Btry 1st Bn 41st FA, commanded by MAJ Nolan Watson, was certified as combat ready. The older Pershing IA missiles were retrograded as the new Pershings entered service. All three battalions of the brigade had achieved operational status by December 1985. With the signing of the Intermediate Nuclear Forces Agreement on December 8, 1987, and its subsequent ratification and implementation, the 56th FA Cmd began the compliance actions required by the treaty. The Command had accomplished its mission of maintaining its peacetime combat readiness and supported the overall objectives of the 1987 Twin Track Agreement. With its objectives accomplished, the Command continued to maintain its readiness level until removed from tactical mission status on 1 Oct 90.>
