They wanted us there? What are you smoking? Ever read the newspaper. There are protests against the U.S. troops in Japan and even Korea, which is one of the reasons we've been withdrawing troops from that region. There are certainly a lot in the Middle East that aren't happy at all about U.S. troops being in their country, some unhappy enough to die in their struggle against our troops. While the elites in Latin American countries might sometimes be happy to have U.S. troops there (sometimes not when it ruins their little fiefdom), the common people have often taken to the streets to protest our presence. Just look at Panama, we haven't always been welcome there, which is why we attacked them in 1989 to install a more favorable government.

The Cold War justified a U.S. presense in many regions of the world to fight communism, although that justification was often abused to further our own economic and strategic interests. But, the cold war is long over, now we're just empire builders.

I think you're looking at things through an ethnocentric American point of view. Step back and think about how you'd feel if a foreign government had troops stationed in the U.S.? Would you be happy? Would most Americans be happy? Would patriotism dictate that they must go and we must regain our sovereignty? Well that's exactly how some people in other countries feel about our troops being stationed in their backyards. It's a matter of patriotism and self determination. They don't want someone else interferring with their country. Just as we don't. Amazing how Americans have such a hard time grasping this simple fact.
