That number is presently serving. If you toss in the veterans and those who now are too young but will serve, that number will be much higher.

To that you need to add the military oriented part of the industrial and educational sector. Not only in percentage of people involved but in percent of GNP. Then you get a feel for the size of the problem.

"The defense industry now employs 2.2 million people, about 2% of the civilian workforce. In Fiscal Year 1999 the Department of Defense awarded $118 billion to contractors for goods and services."

cdi.org

In 1999 16% of the GNP was to be allocated to defense spending.

csis.org

I suspect that that number is much higher today.

You asked about the percentage of Americans serving in the military, and seemed to be impressed with the reply, and then you made your comment. I am just curios - if the percentage would be different, would that make any difference in your thinking? TIA.

<<I find that astounding that less than 1% of the U.S. population is part of the military institution that holds so much sway over all of our lives>>

You do realize that the military is serving the country at our request, not the other way around.

And your point is...???? Was it:: It takes so few to protect so many??? Nahhh...probably not. Maybe it was that you divided the money, and saw that it takes so little to protect so many..... Nahhh...probably not again.

Don't forget to add in the countries, and their population in the world that the US Military protects as well....
