The country is, finally, coming to my position. Polls now, for the first time, show a majority of Americans who think the conquest of Iraq was a bad idea. It was Ms. England's pretty photos that convinced them. Bush should had been honest, before the war, about the true costs, and what could realistically be achieved. Of course, if he'd done that, and followed the Powell Doctrine, we'd still be doing containment and deterrence. If a majority of Iraqis want us to leave (and I mean, leave now, with all our soldiers and all our "contractors"), and a majority of Americans think the war was a mistake, how much longer before we CutAndRun? I'll make yet more specific predictions: 1. Sometime in late 2004 or 2005, no matter who is President, the U.S. will announce a timetable, for the total withdrawal of all American soldiers. The time frame will be months, perhaps weeks. Not years. 2. When we leave, the ground will be held by one or more virulently anti-American militias. Assassins will hunt down and kill anybody who collaborated with us, during our occupation (like what happened in France after 1945, and in S. Vietnam after 1975). We have managed to piss off everybody, even the Kurds (who now, with the new "sovereign" Iraqi government, feel betrayed by us yet again). 3. Our soldiers will not be invited back into Saudi Arabia, and our civilians will be driven out by terrorists. The Saudi regime will, in an attempt to accommodate public opinion, continue to appease our enemies. 4. The campaign to drive the infidels off all Muslim lands, will spread from Saudi Arabia, to the other Gulf States, to Jordan, to Egypt. It will gradually become impossible, for Americans (civilian or military) to operate, in just about any Muslim nation. When they must be there, they will live in fortified enclaves, subject to constant attack. 5. The NeoCons will not accept responsibility for causing any of this. They will blame the cowards and traitors, like me, who stabbed them in the back. They will blame the press, secular humanism, the CIA, the State Department, the French. They will eventually get around to blaming Israel, and each other. But they will never, never, accept personal responsibility. In the Age Of Lies, for every mistake, there is a scapegoat.
