Based upon the government's horrific record at stopping drug smuggling, how could they stop the smuggling of humans?

Well, we've spent even more on stopping illness and death and yet both still prevail. So maybe we ought just do nothing against them.

Illegal immigrants are always going to be with us, regardless of how we'd like it to be.

The point is, we are increasingly unwilling to acknowledge illegal immigrants for what they are - lawbreakers. The principle being broken here is the same that would apply were I to enter your house and then begin sleeping on your floor. Even were I to take out your garbage and begin picking up your trash, your natural right to govern who may be in your home is infringed. The article you mentioned does not get at this most critical point. So it is irrelevant here.

If we were willing to at least put a finger on the problem, we could better deal with it. In truth, we can deal with it. Were I to illegally enter your home, you would likely apply the greatest force to get rid of me, even applying death if necessary. You would be perfectly within your rights to do so. Unfortunately we are not willing to even define the problem. So instead of working to solve it, we feed, clothe, house and educate it at our expense, even entertaining giving it "rights" of citizenship. At the very best, we simply release the problem to re-enter the country at a later date. That is quite obviously no way to solve what ought to be considered a problem.
