I believe some of them had diplomatic personnel aboard who had to be allowed to leave.

As to the others: At the time they left, was it known that 15 of 19 hijackers were Saudis? If yes, they probably should have been detained. This was likely to cause an international ruckus because a good many of those people were officials in the Saudi gov't. OTOH, had they been, say, Venezualans, I doubt the US would hesitate to detain them. Why do the Saudis get a break?

Answer: Reality. They are sitting on at least 25% of known world oil reserves. You want another embargo? How about a wider ME war?

Yeah, it would have been nice to have a long chat with them, but if it means you lose your job and you have no heat next winter, are YOU willing to pay the price?
