If you want to have kids in CA, here are your choices: 1. If you're and immigrant, work in the underground economy 2. Live in a cheap part of CA (Central Valley) 3. Live in a far suburb (For San Francisco read: Manteca, LA: Inland Emprire). Breathe crummy air and put up with a huge commute. (My friend in Manteca commutes 4hrs/day to a job in San Jose Mon-Thurs. On Fri, when the traffic is light and the commute is almost half, they let him work from home) 4. Pay through the nose for a convenient location, then get in line for your kids school (most of the SF Bay Area schools have waiting lists) or private school (1.5-2x Washington State or Texas). Overall, in CA, pay higher gas prices, house prices, state income taxes, state road tax, state car insurance. If you live in Sonoma County the daily toll on the Golden Gate Bridge is $5. About the only 'cheap' item is high speed internet. The additional income one earns in most cases in CA does not make up for the high costs. In Santa Clara, aside from the high income earners, most people with kids live in Morgan Hill, Gilroy (South Santa Clara Cty)-smell like garlic,OR, Seaside, Watsonville, Monterey (Monterey County) and commute 1-2hrs, not bad compared to LA and commuting from Sacramento. Actually the best jobs in Santa Clara County are in the N part (Intel, Cisco etc in Santa Clara City/Mountainview/Milpitas) and about the only large employers in San Jose-which is a closer commute to these cheaper towns S of Santa Clara-is Adobe. Or, as I did, leave CA, and with the money you save, go to Hawaii/San Diego/La Jolla, Palm Springs twice a year, stay in the best hotels, eat at the best restaurants, and still have money left over. What's 10% of the median $105,000 annual income? That's just the beginnings of the savings. Many young California residents who do not like the above choices to have a family in CA leave for Texas, Utah, Nevada, Colorado and Washington State, which I hear are the top 6 choices.
