The nice guy saved me some money and
gladly shared as many beginner secrets as he could remember.

That's what I like to hear. And yup, that's usually how it is when you get talking to these kinds of people. Most of them love to fish, and they love talking about fishing even more. <g>

I had a little bit of success fishing from the sidelines.

I caught a few trees.
Nice in size.
One was a 30 footer. Big and fat.
The other was a 20 foot Elm that put up a heck of a fight.

lol. Well, better to have caught a few trees than to catch your fishing buddy by the ear or some such thing. That's why it's good to just get out and do some casting on your own. You're free to catch all the trees you like.

Things work out well when you are doing something you like.
When I got home I went out on my lawn and began practicing
casting.
(Because I'm still embarrassingly bad at it.)

That's a good way to spend some time. I have a friend who has been doing bass tournaments for years. He has takes his rod to work with him in summer and goes out into the back parking lot, sets up a little bucket a few yards away, and practice casts into it for awhile during lunch time most days. He says it keeps his arm in shape and he can drop his line down right where he wants it to be.

That's terrific about the neighbour who likes to fish. Especially this:

He's going to show me some good spots right around town
and invited me to take a 1/2 hour ride into Connecticut for
some great fishing on a river there that has some big
trout.

Then he pointed out that we live only about an hour from
some world class trout fishing in the Catskill Mountains.

Can't get much better than that, can you?

Looks like we both found a fishing partner.

I'll say.
Looks like it might shape up to be a mighty good summer.

Clapper,

<Looks like we both found a fishing partner>

That sounds great - you are inspiring me. I talked to A18 who is working on Martha's Vinyard for the summer. He just bought a cheap rod, reel and line. They fish for flounder and stripers. He commented on all the fancy fishing gear people have vs. his K-Mart special. He claims the fish don't know what kind of rod you have. He is also looking forward to when the Blues start running (he knows you need plyers so they don't bite your finger off!).

Just exactly how many hobbies do you have?
