I suspect the cost would depend a lot on the publisher. SYBEX, one of my customers, has CDs in lots of their books and so is very used to doing it. But, a lot of art book publishers probably aren't geared up for it.

Michal and Thomas,
Thanks for the feedback on this. I've been tossing the idea around for awhile and trying to figure out possible format before I get very far along with this project. Last winter, I experimented with possibilities for a CD type publication. Biggest problem is that this would be most useful in print -- a book containing a lot of trail information, but with additional stuff. Some people that I know have been fooling around with something similar for canoe routes and requested feedback from a gang on the canoe forum that I belong to. It turned out that people just weren't too hot on a CD-only route publication (even though they could print maps off on their printers easily enough).

I used to do quite a lot of small-circulatioin magazine lay-out and editing -- did 2 bi-monthly magazines for several years. I can actually see doing my project as a self-published book distributed through a number of outlets in my own region of the country. Biggest hitch for me is if I tried to work in colour photos -- it would be nice to include the images, but that pushes the cost up quite high for the kind of publication I'm thinking of. May have to just go with the b&w book format and do something else with the photos.

Anyhow, it's great to hear ideas from everyone. Thanks!

And now, back to our regularly scheduled digital photography talk!
