Glen,
Bush (41) didn't win the 1994 Presidential Election (no such election). Gump was best film in 1994 (and Hanks won for Best Actor).

"Hanks won consecutive Oscars in 1993 and 1994 for the leading roles in "Philadelphia" and "Forrest Gump," respectively."

You're wrong, Bush Sr. did not "wipe the floor with Dukakis". In fact, Bush came from way behind to beat Dukakis. 3-4 months before the election Dukakis was way out front, I think 15% ahead of Bush.

Forrest Gump had a very profound influence on the national psyche that summer because is took us on a recent history tour from its own point of view and Forrest represented the average rural White Joe spirit. The film was very negative toward Vietnam era liberals which I gues Dukakis could be associated with. Some sleazy hippy type stole Meg Ryan from him and got her hooked on heroin. When 40 million people see that it makes a difference. It gets into the mass consciousness just the way Abu Graib or Reagan's death might.
