<At a time when nuclear talks with North Korea are once again breaking down before they start due to differences between the United States and South Korea, and at a time when South Koreans are questioning the motives of the U.S. force restructuring in South Korea, the killing of Kim is resonating across the Peninsula.>

Couldn't this be a case of 'better the devil you know' in working with the US? Who would work with them against N. Korea? Japan has yet to remilitarize. China and Russia have been somewhat complacent. A la Tony Blair what seems good for the nation may have domestic reverberations that preclude a second term, but the other options (what other options) in dealing with the North don't look pretty. Japan is still trying to return a handful of kidnapped Japanese. Tells you where their priorities lie.

Perhaps one day China, Japan will decide to stop buying T-Bills and invest in their own military, but that day is not yet upon us. Russia can't even handle Chechnya-vital to their oil exports. Will S. Korea want to go it alone with N. Korea?
