I know what I said. You very clearly don't. Either cite something and make an issue of it, or drop this line of argument completely. If you are going to criticize anybody's past postings, either you cite or you shut up. If that isn't basic message board etiquette, I don't know what is.

So you move the goalposts to the runup to elections. What will you do when that goes off without a hitch? Move it up to the drafting of the Constitution? Full national elections in 06? Steven's correct. Stuff can go wrong at any stage. He's pessimistic, that's all. He's seen the Philippines post-Marcos and it's been very difficult. Iraq was in much worse condition under Hussein than the Philippines was under Marcos. Greater corruption, greater brutality, and so forth. And it has the disadvantage of having oil which makes economic development difficult. Lots can go wrong in Iraq. For instance: some religious leaders would like to take the country in a direction most citizens don't want; they can't make rule of law stick - for instance, religious leaders don't get prosecuted for their misdeeds, or courts are intimidated; the Sunnis N and W of Baghdad won't cooperate in democracy; the Shias won't protect minority rights; corruption can't be kept under control; Can't get a good handle on the security situation; Etc; None of these things in themselves is unsolvable but they certainly could take a good while to resolve. I'm not as pessimistic as Steven but I can't see the next few months and years being easy.
