Good points. We care when there is an economic reason to care. Like all that oil sitting in and around Iraq. I think the U.S. basically set Saddam up, and wanted him to invade Kuwaitt, as a pretext to permantly station our troops in that important region. It all makes too much sense in retrospect. It's not like an Iraqi invasion of Kuwait was an unprecedented event. The British thrwarted an Iraqi invasion of Kuwaitt in the early 1970s by sending troops to protect Kuwaitt. Also, there were documents dating all the way back to the Carter adminstration that warned of a possible war in the Middle East with Iraq. It's not like our leaders were just caught with their pants down when Saddam took over Kuwait on August 2, 1990. We had plenty of warning in the form of threats from Saddam and satelite photos, historic precedent, and military studies, but sat by and let him do it. Imagine that! We made out like bandits too. We were able to place our troops in the Middle East where they previously were unwelcomed and were able to better control the flow of oil.
